In September of 2016 EduvateRI launched the first annual Education Innovation Month. Check out the events we hosted below!
States of Incarceration - September 1-24
States of Incarceration is a multi-media traveling exhibition on the history and future of mass incarceration in the United States. It was developed by faculty and students at twenty different universities across the country and was designed by the Brooklyn-based architecture firm Matter Practice with graphic designers Pure+Applied. The exhibition will travel to the home cities of each of the contributing universities from April 2016 – October 2018, with stops at the California Museum of Photography in Riverside, CA; the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro, NC; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the Tang Teaching Museum in Saratoga Springs.
Rhode Coders Club - Sept. 7
A gathering of adults who are NEW to coding/programming and want to explore the possibilities of coding. Each week will feature a 20-30 minute instructional segment and the remainder of the time will be practicing, learning and collaborating using the www.codecademy.com web platform. Each member will have an account and can learn/work at their own pace. We hope to foster a team environment with lots of collaboration! We will be meeting every Wednesday Night from 6:00pm to 7:30pm in the 5th floor of the Providence Public Library.
AS220 Youth: Future Worlds: Uprising - September 9
Future Worlds is a performance experience merging art, theater, digital media, design, fashion, and social commentary. Created by the young people at AS220 YOUTH. Synopsis: Sattah X and Jay grew up in the heart of a dystopian Providence, set a 20 years in the future. While Expression and creativity are banned, conformity and consumerism are greatly encouraged. A corporate conglomerate of the world’s wealthiest pharmaceutical, prison and factory farmed institutions are run by one man, Wallace Fitzgerald. While his intentions are to create a society of suppressed consumers that the fuel the capitalists agenda, Sattah X and Jay unknowingly hold the power to create systemic revolution.
Roger on the Block - September 10
Join in the fun at the "Roger on the Block" neighborhood block party on Saturday, September 10, celebrating Roger Williams University's new Providence Campus at One Empire Street. The party will feature live musical entertainment - including some of New England's most popular acts like DJ Knockout, Sidy Maïga, Krook Rock, Chachi, Case Closed, Salsa Y Gaita and others - festive food, cultural activities and family fun! Roger Williams University's partnering organizations and new neighbors will be there to share information about their community resources. This event is free and open to the public.
<Intra>City Geeks present Code Night with the Mayor - September 14
Mayor Elorza has decided to learn how to code and develop websites, and he is inviting you to come out and learn with him... for free! A laptop and an RSVP request is required. Space is limited to 80 attendees. This group will meet once per month and you will receive a complimentary online web development course. You will learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Jquery, Php, MySQL, Bootstrap, API’s and more as you code and learn how to develop real websites. IntraCity Geeks assistants will be on hand to assist, work with you and answer any questions you may have.

BIF Summit - September 14-15
One of the nation's most renowned storytelling gatherings, the BIF Summit provides innovators with the space to be curious and crazy, get inspired, and collide with unusual collaborators. Benevolent troublemakers need community, a space to play, and opportunities to collide. The BIF Summit exists as a means to enable a purposeful community of innovation junkies who want to design, prototype, and test new business models and social systems in the real world.
DESIGN WEEK RI - September 16
DESIGN WEEK RI celebrates design and the RI design community. DESIGN WEEK RI will convene September 14 -25, 2016 and creates shared experiences and opportunities for collaborative engagement with talented designers in Rhode Island.
The Prison Education Movement: Does Brown Have a Role? - September 16
What would it take to establish a Brown Program for Prison Education? How can Brown work with other Rhode Island institutions to strengthen existing higher education programs in the state’s prisons and to develop new ones? Join us to hear local and national leaders in the prison education movement speak about their programs, the state of this growing field and Brown’s potential contribution to college-level educational opportunities for Rhode Island’s incarcerated population of more than 3,000 men and women.

RIDE Innovation Powered by Technology Conference - September 17
How can technology improve learning to ensure that all students have access to high-quality educational experiences? Over 1200 educators, students, school leaders, educational partners and community members across Rhode Island and neighboring states come together to connect, collaborate, network, and share ideas, solutions and strategies!
EdTechRI Meetup - September 19
EdTechRI bridges the gap between educators and entrepreneurs to foster collaboration and partnerships in bringing innovative educational technology into the classroom. By connecting directly with educators, companies are able to receive valuable feedback from the field and adapt their products to actual classroom settings. By working with companies, teachers are able to experiment with new practices and routines supported by next generation products.
College Unbound Symposium - September 21
The Prison Bridge Program at College Unbound is hosting the first in a Reentry Symposium series to examine how higher education can play a significant role in the success of people returning home from prison. Discussion will be driven by formerly incarcerated individuals who have successfully completed degrees with the aim of supporting others on similar paths to success.

ECET2 Conference - 23-24
Beginning on September 23, 2016, educators from Providence Schools will participate in a two-day forum called Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teaching and Teachers (ECET2 Providence). This forum is centered around the belief that teachers hold the key to ensuring educational policy is well-informed, instructional shifts are made with fidelity, and educators are equipped with the right professional development to be effective in the classroom.
Startup Weekend Education - 23-25
Startup Weekend Education (SWEDU) is an action-oriented weekend designed to take you from idea to startup in just 54 hours. At SWEDU happening across the country, educators, business professionals, and hackers conceptualize and build viable products, services, and school models that solve education’s most pressing problems. SWEDU participants pitch their idea to other attendees, then form teams that will work for two days building a prototype and business model to pitch to a panel of judges on Sunday. SWEDU brings educators into the process of solving problems they face firsthand, integrating their perspective into solutions at conception. Everyone is welcome and no previous entrepreneurial experience is required!
Better World by Design Conference - 23-29
Better World by Design is a student-led initiative at Brown and Rhode Island School of Design that celebrates interdisciplinary collaboration between designers, educators, innovators, and learners. They envision a world where design-thinking is accessible to everyone in order to catalyze positive change on a local and global scale. Their year builds up to an annual 3-day conference that reinvigorates these ideas and inspires them to continue these conversations.

For elementary school families, Children will have the opportunity to use their imaginations to design projects using free computer coding software and other sequencing activities.
Maker Space Madness at Captain Isaac Paine - September 28
Come join our 5th grade Tech Ambassadors & Science and Technology Coach as we roll out how the Maker Space was designed using our student's ideas, how students will be utilizing the space, and preview a couple of the Maker Stations. Light refreshments will be served. Register here.
